How to Get Makeup Out of Carpet

Makeup can enhance our looks but it can also leave stains on the carpet. Here’s how you can remove them.

1. Lift the Solids

The first thing that you want to do is to lift the solids (if there are any). You can do this by using the edge of a credit card or a dull knife.

Avoid rubbing motions—that’ll only set the stain in deeper, which will make it harder to remove.

For dry powders such as bronzers, use a lint roller. That will allow you to remove the powder from the carpet.

2. Apply Detergent

Next, you want to treat the oily component of the stain. One way to do this is by using detergent.

Mix a small amount with some hot water in a bowl. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and use it to clean the stain—working from the outside toward the center (that prevents it from spreading). Continue until there’s no more color transfer.

Dampen a second cloth and use it to “rinse” out the detergent solution. That will prevent it from attracting more stains. When you’re finished, blot it dry.

Note: You can also use a commercial carpet cleaning solution.

3. Use Bleach

In some cases, that might not be enough. Consider using an oxygen-based bleach if the stain is still visible after cleaning with detergent.

Create a solution by mixing bleach with cool water. Apply it onto the stain and let it sit for a couple of hours. Check the spot afterward. Repeat if traces of the stain remain.

Never use undiluted bleach—it can stain the carpet further.
