1. Grab Your Cleaning Ingredients and Tools

The first when cleaning your window tracks is to collect all of the needed cleaning ingredients and tools for the job. There are a few different steps and tools needed to get the job done right. Here’s what you need:

  • Vacuum
  • Baking Soda
  • White Vinegar
  • Spray Bottle
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Old Toothbrush
  • Butter Knife
  • Paper Towels

Once you’ve collected all of your cleaning ingredients and tools, you can begin the cleaning process.

2. Begin by Opening Your Window

To start cleaning, wipe down the windows themselves and then open your windows. You can remove the window screen if desired, but it’s not necessary. If you choose to remove the screen, take it outside and spray it down with a garden hose to clean.

Once it’s sprayed off, pat it dry with a rag and leave it out to air-dry some more until you’re finished cleaning the window tracks.

3. Grab Your Vacuum Cleaner

Now it’s time to grab your vacuum cleaner. A mini vacuum or a vacuum with a narrow nozzle hose is ideal. Use the narrow nozzle to vacuum all of the loose dirt and dead insects from the tracks.

If you have a vacuum nozzle with a brush on it, it’s best not to use the brush attachment during this step. The loose dirt and dead insects can become trapped in the brushes bristles. Clean the window tracks with the window open and with the window closed as well.

4. Use Your Cleaning Ingredients

Now it’s time to use your cleaning ingredients. Take the baking soda and sprinkle it into the window tracks. Do your best to sprinkle the powder without creating clumps of it.

Mix together a solution of half water and half vinegar. Now place this vinegar cleaning solution in the spray bottle and spray the window tracks with it. The baking soda and the solution will start to fizz.

Leave it for about 5-10 minutes. While it sits, also spray the vertical tracks on the window as well. Grab the toothbrush and the rubber gloves and scrub all of the tracks starting from the highest point.

5. Wipe the Dirt and Grime Away

Take your paper towels and wipe down the tracks from the top to the bottom. Use a clean paper towel for each track. If the tracks still appear to be dirty, spray them again with the solution and wipe down with another paper towel.

Once they’re clean, take the butter knife and more paper towels to get inside all of the small cracks that might still be harvesting dirt and grime.

At the very end of your cleaning, spray down any more areas that seem to need a final cleaning touch. Then, replace the screen and close the window. You’re all done!
