5 Effective Kitchen Cleaning Tips for Homeowners

kitchen cleaning tips

The kitchen is the heart of many homes. It’s where family meals are prepped and cooked and where all the yummy snacks and food are. Everyone loves the kitchen, but not when it’s dirty.

Did you know your kitchen is one of the dirtiest rooms in a home? This is because bacteria from food, dirty dishes, and dish sponges all lurk here. The kitchen sink, the countertops, and the cutting boards are some of the most contaminated surfaces.

Fortunately, you can keep your kitchen clean with the best kitchen cleaning tips. Continue reading the guide below to learn how to clean a kitchen!

1. Start by Eliminating

The first step to a clean kitchen is to eliminate any unnecessary items. The more items in your kitchen, the higher risk of contaminated surfaces. Start cleaning your kitchen by removing anything from the counters that is no longer needed.

Then, clean out your cabinets as well. You want to create more storage space for the items you do want to keep. If your counters are currently full of appliances, then you’ll want to wipe them down and place them inside the cabinets.

Clear countertops help keep the kitchen clean, give you more prep space, and look amazing as well!

2. Clean Top to Bottom

Once you’re ready to start dusting, wiping down surfaces, sweeping, and mopping, be sure to start from the top of your kitchen and work your way down. Dust can accumulate on top of the refrigerator, the exhaust fan, light fixtures, and on top of cabinets. Start by dusting and wiping down these surfaces first.

When the dust falls down to lower surfaces, you’ll eventually clean these surfaces as you work your way down. Food crumbs that fall onto the floor will eventually be swept before mopping the floor. This makes the cleaning process much easier for you.

3. Wipe the Sink After Dishes

If you wash dishes by hand in your sink, then you’ll want to let the water out as soon as you’re done washing them. Allowing the water to stay in the sink can create a grease ring and might cause food particles to stick onto the sink’s surface. After draining the water, be sure to then wipe down the entire sink.

Remove all bacteria and grease. Don’t forget to wipe down the faucet and handles as well.

4. Use Degreasing Dish Soap on Cabinets

One part of your kitchen you might not think to clean is the kitchen cabinets. From cooking and prepping food, your cabinets can become splashed with grease and bacteria. To easily clean the cabinets without leaving streak marks, use a degreasing dish soap.

Mix a small amount of dish soap with warm water and dip a soft microfiber cloth into the mixture. Wipe the cabinets down and allow them to air dry.

5. Know Your Countertop Surface

Do you know what your countertops are made from? Not all surfaces should be cleaned the same way. For example, you never want to use bleach on quartz or marble.

A mixture of dish soap, warm water, and a cloth are ideal for many surfaces, but it’s always best to know what your countertops are made from and then cleaning them in a proper manner.
