how to easily clean a microwave

Think your microwave is clean? Unfortunately, both E.coli and Salmonella can live inside a microwave, so not keeping this go-to appliance sanitary can make you sick. Hidden bacteria lurk in leftover spots and stains, which can contaminate food.

Many people find scrubbing the microwave is one of their least favorite chores and put it off. However, it’s easier than you might think to sanitize one.

Here are our tips on how to easily clean a microwave.

How to Easily Clean a Microwave: 4 Quick Tricks

There will always be times when food splatters inside the microwave and gets caked on the walls or the top of the appliance. Sometimes, it’s tough scrubbing that cooked-on gunk off.

Thankfully, there are a few tips you can use to make it easier, and all with products you likely already have.

1. Vinegar

Take a microwave-safe bowl and fill it with two tablespoons of white vinegar and two cups of water. Microwave the mixture for five minutes to ensure it gets steamy. The mixture should help to loosen the grime inside.

Wait for around 10 minutes before opening the door, and be careful touching the bowl as it might still be hot.

Wipe down the microwave plate and the inside of the appliance with a clean, soft rag or a paper towel.

2. Lemon

Vinegar does have a strong smell, which can put some people off from using it. Lemon works just as well if you’re looking for some quick microwave cleaning tips.

Cut a lemon in half and squeeze the juice into a microwave-safe bowl. Keep the seeds out using a sieve. Place the lemon pieces into the container as well, and add one cup of water.

Run the microwave for five minutes and let it sit for ten minutes before opening.

Finally, finish by cleaning the glass plate and wiping the interior.

3. Baking Soda

A microwave is a prime place for odors to build and linger. Baking soda is a go-to cleaner that also doubles as a deodorizer.

Mix two tablespoons of baking soda with one cup of water inside a microwave-safe container. Set it on high for five minutes, and then let the mixture rest for five to ten minutes.

Again, remove the glass plate to wash and wipe down the inside of your dirty microwave to watch the grime easily disappear.

4. Dish Soap

One of the oldest and most common methods for cleaning a microwave is to use dish soap and a clean sponge. Simply remove the glass plate to wash separately, and then squirt a few drops of dish soap into a bowl full of water and wipe down the inside.

Start from the top and work your way down, so you don’t have to repeat areas. Rinse and repeat as necessary until your microwave is spotless.

Avoid getting water in the microwave vents!

One of the easiest ways to keep your microwave clean and sanitary is to make cleaning it part of your kitchen cleaning checklist.
