forget to clean

Did you know that there’s probably more fecal matter on your kitchen cutting board than inside your toilet?

We’re not suggesting you start prepping your meals on the toilet seat. However, you might be shocked to learn that the germiest places in your home aren’t the places you’d think.

There are many places inside our homes that we forget to clean (or don’t clean often enough). The problem is it’s usually those places that harbor the most germs and allergens.

An annual deep cleaning will help, but it’s not enough to keep your home sparkling clean and germ-free. Here’s a list of places most people forget to clean.

1. Kitchen Sponges & Rags

Over 75% of rags and sponges carry E. coli, salmonella, and fecal matter. By way of comparison, researchers find these same contaminants on only 9% of bathroom sink handles.

To keep things cleaner, swap out your dish towels every other day. Once a week, place your damp sponges in the microwave for 60 seconds to destroy hidden germs and bacteria.

2. Indoor Plants

You might dust every surface of your home — but did you forget to clean the plants? Household plants (whether fake or real) accumulate a surprising amount of dust.

Use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe off each leaf or branch. To dust silk plants, you could also use a hairdryer on a cool setting.

3. TV Remote

Like other places we often touch with our hands, remotes tend to be one of the germiest places in the house. Use an antibacterial wipe and give every inch of your remotes a thorough wipe-down.

4. Undersides of Furniture

You probably run a Swiffer on the floor under your couches and beds, but when’s the last time you’ve cleaned the actual undersides of your big furniture?

You’ll be shocked at what accumulates beneath couches, beds, and chairs. Use a vacuum or dusting wand to clear out those dust bunnies and spider webs.

5. The Dishwasher

Experts recommend cleaning your dishwasher at least once a year, but many of us rarely (if ever) get around to it. The problem is it becomes a perfect breeding ground for mold, food particles, and other grime.

Clean out the filter and spray your dishwasher with a solution of 70% white vinegar and 30% water. Let it soak for 15 minutes before running a hot water cycle. Afterward, coat the bottom of the dishwasher with baking soda, let it sit overnight, and run another hot wash cycle the next morning.
